Plus: Phils land All-Star in 5-player trade
The 2022 season was a storybook one for Justin Verlander.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020 and enduring essentially two lost seasons, Verlander and the Astros agreed to a $25 million deal last March in the hopes that he'd be able to rediscover a semblance of his old self. The 39-year-old Verlander did that and then some, going 18-4 with a 1.75 ERA in 28 starts en route to his third Cy Young Award, while helping the Astros claim a World Series championship.
With Verlander's historic comeback in mind, here are 12 players whose health in 2023 will be an X-factor. Injuries hampered this group last season, but each has the ability to make a huge difference for his respective club in the new year. | |
| The MLB Draft League helped produce 47 draftees in 2022, and now it is sending a manager to pro ball. Former big leaguer Homer Bush will manage the Atlantic League's Staten Island FerryHawks after a year in MLB's collegiate summer league. | | |
| Long before launch angle and exit velocity were a thing, Minor Leaguer Andy Oyler hit a home run that definitely would not qualify as a barrel. It traveled approximately 24 inches. | | |
| There are few things more satisfying than a nice round number, but these players narrowly fell short of a milestone figure in otherwise memorable careers. | | |
| Who was the last Tigers pitcher to lead the Major Leagues in saves? | |
