Plus: A barehanded catch ... by the batter?
Catching is incredibly hard, so the backstops who can play great defense and consistently produce at the plate are few and far between. J.T. Realmuto is one of those few especially gifted players -- and it seems that he's found a way to combine those skillsets.
The Phillies opened a weekend series in Cleveland on Friday and, after working the count full in his third-inning at-bat against Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams, Realmuto was granted time with Williams already mid-delivery. Trying to ease up on the pitch without risking injury, Williams lobbed the sphere right at Realmuto, who acted as you might expect a catcher to when a pitcher tosses him a ball. | |
